Day 7, Tuesday

Started the day by driving down to Petty Harbour which was featured in a recent article in the Boston  Globe.  The article talked about how the cod industry has really suffered due to overfishing.  We wanted to see this village, and it was nearby.  We were very surprised to discover that the village is on Bidgood's Cove.  Amazing.  As the sign below says; it's still an active working fishing village.

Could resist taking a picture of this guy who is overlooking Bidgood's Cove.

After leaving Petty's Harbout we returned to the Rooms Museum in St. John's which has a variety of exhibits including one on the history of Newfoundland and its people, and another on the contribution  and devastation that Newfoundland suffered as a result of so many of their young men being killed during WWI and the battle of the Somme which was in northern France.  The WWI exhibit was very detailed and graphic, displaying many horrific photos as well as very personal narratives about the individual soldiers from Newfoundland, their families, and how the war impacted them at home and on the battle field.

The museum was beautiful, all glass, with fabulous views of St. John's, Signal Hill, the Narrows, and the Fort Amherst Light.  As an added bonus the museum also has an incredible restaurant where we had a delicious lunch of a brandade de more au gratin, a seafood chowder, a baked cod casserole, and for dessert, sticky toffee pudding.  A great day.
