Relaxing breakfast at Mira River Provisional Park Campground. This one was even quieter than the previous one, although it was a lot less crowded. It gets an A.
Our itinerary for this day was simple, visit Fort Louisbourg in the morning, and then drive to North Sydney, where we will board the Newfoundland ferry at 3:30 PM. We loved the Fort which was a restoration of the original built in 1713 by the French. It's a National Historical Site for Canada; and It's somewhat like Sturbridge Village, Plimoth Plantation, and Williamsburg in the sense that all the staff are in period costume. We loved it; especially all the buildings.
We left Louisbourg at 12:45 and headed for North Sydney which was only about 25 K away. Arriving in North Sydney around 2 pm, we had a great lunch at the Black Spoon Bistrot...best seafood chowder I've ever had.
From there we drove to the ferry line, which was only a two minute drive. At this point it was raining but it really didn't matter since all we had to do was sit in the car and wait to board.
The ferry was huge, it carries 345 cars...nothing like the Cape Cod's Hyline fleet. There wasn't much of a view as we pulled out of North Sydney, very foggy and raining, so really no photo opportunities.
We'd reserved a room which included beds, a toilet and shower so that we'd have comfortable accommodations for our 16 hour sail and we were certainly glad we did. The crossing was very smooth, hardly any rocking, and you could really only tell you were moving by the slight vibrations of the engines. Very peaceful...which is a good thing since it looked like there was only one lifeboat on the ship.
The food on the ship was terrible, we only ate snacks and even those were bad, but after our wonderful lunch, we didn't mind it. We sat in the lounge for several hours watching the Olympics before heading to bed around 9:30 PM.
