Day 6, Monday

Today was all about breathtaking coast lines, lighthouses, and harbors.  After our morning routine we headed to Cape Spear, the eastern most point in North America.  We were able to see it from a distance yesterday when we were atop Signal Hill, but it's one of those place you have to see close up to really appreciate.

We spent 2 hours walking around the point and the lighthouse buildings.  I could spend all day staring at the ocean when it crashes into rocks.  Couldn't stop taking pictures, each view was different and spectacular.

We talked for quite a while to a couple from Australia who reinforced my belief that the Aussies are the friendliest people in the world.

The Old Man moved to Newfoundland!

One of Newfoundland's Guns of Navarone.

That is the color of the water!

Great tube, but a short ride, with a very rocky finish.

Behind Joni, to her right you can just barely make out Justin Trudeau, who was visiting Signal Hill just as this picture was taken.

Looking south from Cape Spear.

The remains of WWII cannons and fortifications made me this of the Guns of Navarone, although the ones at Cape Spear were never needed despite the abundance of U-Boats that terrorized the North Atlantic.

From Cape Spear we headed north through St. John's to the tiny fishing village of Quidi Vidi. This village is just a hike down from the top of Signal Hill which we visited yesterday, but we chose to drive, not hike.

Can you tell this photo is actually upside down?

The harbor is incredibly picturesque, but no longer as busy as it once was before the cod disappeared.  Very reminiscent of Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia, but much smaller.  This village is also home to a small brewery that produces Ice Burg beer, which is very tasty.  We're enjoying it for dinner.

Leaving Quidi Vidi, we drove to the lighthouse at Fort Amherst, which overlooks the Narrows, just opposite of Signal Hill.  Like Cape Spear, the views were incredible, and we had a fun conversation with a couple from Hamilton, Ontario.  The woman grew up in Newfoundland, so she had lots of suggestions on where to visit.

Again, Justin Trudeau

I think today's sights epitomized what I think about when I think of Newfoundland.  I could revisit all three places tomorrow and enjoy it just as much.
